Women's runs - the trend is booming

When it comes to trends in the sports and fitness sector, women's runs are certainly one of them. Women's runs have been springing up like mushrooms for several years now and are inspiring more and more female runners. The reason probably lies in the special mix of events: sport, fun and action and all of this just among women and side by side with your best friend - that's what women's running is all about. So it's no wonder that some women's runs already have five-digit numbers of participants.

Women's runs have long since become established and everyone knows about them. But what is so special about these runs? For women, it's usually not about athletic performance, but about having fun running and exercising with friends.

Any woman can take part in a Women's Run, regardless of age and ability. It's about having fun exercising and socialising with like-minded people.

For women, running is more about the health aspect. They want to stay fit and vital and strengthen their cardiovascular system. In contrast, men are often very performance-orientated and strive for the best time.

Many women's runs are organised as charity runs. This means that donations are collected for good causes. Most women's runs focus on health issues that affect women. For example, money is often raised for breast cancer research, as is the case with the KoRo Women's Run.

Women's races offer more than just running

In addition to just running, many women's races also offer extras, such as a spa area to relax in at the finish. The starting shirts distributed at most races are also in bright colours, often pink. They are designed to transform the route into a vibrant sea of colour and keep the fun factor high.

Women's runs are now organised in a wide variety of disciplines. They can be found in the running categories, among others:

  • Obstacle course
  • city run
  • trail run
  • charity run

Women's runs are currently experiencing an absolute boom and over 100 women's runs are now being organised in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The largest women's runs in Europe are in Vienna and Bern with over 20,000 runners.

Perfectly equipped for your women's run

You should kit yourself out with the right equipment in advance for your participation in a women's run. In addition to the general functional running clothing, such as a running shirt and running shorts, it is particularly important to find the right running shoes and a well-fitting sports bra.

Running shoes for women differ from those for men in some respects. They usually have a narrower cut and softer cushioning. You should buy your running shoes some time before the women's run so that you can break them in. Never start a run in new shoes. The risk of getting blisters, for example, is then very high. You should recognise these potential problems in advance so that you can get new shoes if necessary.

A suitable sports bra is of course essential, especially for women. It should be breathable and provide good support. However, the sports bra should not cut in and leave unpleasant pressure points.

In general, make sure that your running clothes are breathable and wick away sweat well.

History - the fight to allow women to run

In the past, women were not allowed to take part in running competitions. In order to show that the female sex was also prepared for a sporting competition of this kind, the American Kathrine Switzer dared to register for the Boston Marathon in 1967 under the name K.V. Switzer.

She started, but when it was realised that she was a woman, people tried to stop her. The runner's friends and family prevented this. She eventually completed the race in 4 hours and 20 minutes. In 1972, women were officially allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon and by then a third of the finishers in various running events were women.

1972 also saw the first all-women's race in New York. This was the ‘Crazylegs Mini Marathon’, which was later renamed the ‘New York Mini 10K’ and is one of the oldest women's races in the world. In 1984, a women's marathon was held at the Olympics for the first time.
