Running in Austria - a variety like nowhere else in Europe

Hardly any other country in Europe offers its inhabitants as many opportunities for sporting activities as Austria. Whether football, skiing, ski jumping, hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking or running, there are no limits to sporting diversity in Austria. The diversity of running in particular is hard to beat. Interested runners can let off steam at all kinds of running events in Austria: Marathons, cross-country races, mountain runs, obstacle courses, etc. - there is no type of running sport that does not exist in Austria.

A look at the running calendar also shows this. Every year, over 500 small to large running events take place in Austria. The special thing about it is that almost every running event has a unique location that is worth taking part in.

When you think of running in Austria, cross-country running and mountain running immediately spring to mind. No wonder, because there is no shortage of mountains such as the Grossglockner, the Wildspitze or the Weisskugel in Austria. The alpine terrain is therefore a true paradise for trail runners and mountain runners all over the world.

But obstacle courses are also becoming increasingly popular in Austria. Obstacle courses are also usually held at higher altitudes, as they harmonise perfectly with the challenging trails. This makes obstacle courses in Austria the ideal change of pace for trail runners and mountain runners. Of course, there are also a number of established running events, including marathons, half marathons and fun runs.

Popular running events in Austria

Nowadays, every type of running event has at least one exceptional event to its name. In obstacle running, for example, the Spartan Race in Oberndorf magically attracts more than 6,000 athletes every year. When it comes to marathons, there is no way around the Vienna City Marathon in Vienna. Over 40,000 participants take part every year. When it comes to mountain running, the Grossglockner Mountain Run is the measure of all things. Hardly any other mountain run in Europe is more strenuous and spectacular than this mountain run. For cross-country runners, on the other hand, the Trail Maniak is the absolute highlight every year. This trail run is the largest trail running event in Austria, which is also often referred to as ‘Trail Runner's Paradise’.

There are also a number of other great running events in Austria that you should definitely not miss. So it's worth taking a look at our running calendar for Austria!

Running calendar Austria 2025

The running calendar in Austria is divided into the individual federal states: Burgenland, Salzburg, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna. Each of the individual states has its own scenic advantages and organises a number of running events. Nevertheless, Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Tyrol are the running hot spots in Austria.

Running calendar for Lower Austria

Lower Austria is a real sports paradise in both summer and winter and is also the largest federal state in Austria. In terms of landscape, Lower Austria has everything a sportsman's heart could desire. There are mountains over 2,000 metres high, numerous lakes and, of course, beautiful hiking trails that stretch through the endless forests. It is therefore not surprising that Lower Austria hosts by far the most running events in Austria. A total of around 150 running events are organised in Lower Austria every year. These include mountain runs, cross-country races, marathons and obstacle courses. This means that the running calendar is full to bursting and offers maximum variety.

Running calendar for Upper Austria

With almost 100 running events every year, Upper Austria is the federal state with the second most running events in Austria. With the Alps, the foothills of the Alps and an extensive forest and meadow landscape, Upper Austria has a lot to offer, just like Lower Austria. However, the terrain is generally rather flat and hilly.

Running calendar for Tyrol

With around 50 running events, Tyrol has the third most running events in Austria. In terms of landscape, Tyrol is mainly characterised by the Alps. The five highest mountains in Tyrol are all over 3,700 metres high. This means that numerous extreme runs and mountain runs take place in Tyrol, where it feels like endless metres of altitude have to be covered.
